Ben and I met up with Craig yesterday for his first ride since being back (he flew in last weekend) after 6 weeks traveling around South America.
At 8am it was already in the mid 20′s with a forecast of 30+ so I struggled to keep my breakfast down on the climb upwards….which is becoming a bit of a theme this summer! Craig and Ben shot off up Rapaki while I spun up hurting like an old man…. cursing under my breath about the extra rear tyre weight since swapping out the Nobby Nic for an Eskar due to rim dings and flats.
By the time we had got to Castle Rock it was cooking up there and we were all feeling it….especially Craig :/ Reaching the bottom of Castle Rock I was happy to see no pinch flats or rear wheel dings…. a first in 4 rides! The Eskar’s extra volume is fantastic, if not a tad heavy and sluggish under acceleration. After some more sun block and food we headed off for Greenwood…. which was in primo condition. Interestingly, I felt slow heading downwards… until I stopped and saw the gap between us! The Wolf is a monster…..plain and simple!
Craig opted for some road sections while Ben and I took to the dirt and after a VERY welcomed water stop near the carpark (we were all on empty by this stage) we hit the Anaconda and were at Taylors then the nightmare climb out in the unrelenting heat. Craig stayed back at the beach for a swim while Ben and I headed back to the City. Aircon and an ice cold coke greeted me at home which was fantastic!…..boy oh boy this summer is a hot one!
It’s great to have you back Craig….see you soon mate :)
