Well. It has been on the cards for sometime and the majority of the posts at www.mountainbikingnewzealand.co.nz will shortly become part of my personal blogging rather than a fully dedicated website devoted to “two wheels”. With work commitments, more time doing “outdoor stuff”, training and a total change of attitude/ outlook to what cycling means to me these days- I’m simply tired and unmotivated when it comes to writing the same stuff month after month. With several personal websites “on the go” too- I’m also wanting to consolidate them to keep the running costs down each year. What I do want to share though on top of my love for cycling, is more about all the other stuff that I enjoy which includes a heap more outdoor stuff like trail running, tramping, and camping as well as my love for technology, photography, food and more.
I’m really looking forward to the shift and it has taken me 6+ months of “yes” & “no” with a fair amount of “should I” & “what about the traffic…” but it is now the right time to make the move. At the moment I’m working out the best way to migrate all of the content from here over to my personal website www.paulpetch.com and then I’ll also migrate the posts from www.runningnewzealand.co.nz.
With some category revisions and a bit of tinkering- it won’t take me to long to get things back in order I’m sure. And by all accounts the traffic should return with a few weeks, which will then hopefully bring in more in the future due to additional content. I would like to take this time though to thank all of you for contributing over the past few years, beit by posting comments, photos, grabbing news feeds or return visits. Having 18,000+ page views (yeah that is not a typo) a month has totally and utterly blown my mind.
What I do hope though when I move over to the new “home” is that my posts have more sustenance than what MTBNZ has provided over the years with a focus on all things that I love rather than just my bike riding.
Cheers & happy trails.
Paul
Update 27/11/09: Within less than 24hrs I’ve managed to shift the original blog from www.mountainbikingnewzealand.co.nz over to its new home at www.paulpetch.com. After importing the posts from my “other blog” at www.runningnewzealand.co.nz -I then setup a 301 re-direct from both to here…..to make Googlers happy. On top of the move- I’ve decided to install the latest template for this wordpress release and that went swimingly too :/ I’m sure that there will be a bit more “house keeping”, but I’m super happy with the new content and look…..so it’s business as usual around here. If anyone has any issues, or can see potential problems, please can you let me know? Thanks :)

That’s a shame paul – been a nice little community (albeit loose) for a while but can totally understand the reasoning. Via the site I’ve come to realise that there is good riding to be done up and down the country (not just my own 04 backyard) via the posts and videos you’ve added so you can count that as at least 1 good outcome from the site :)
Hey Nick :) Thanks. It is good to hear that the blog has helped you appreciate some fine South Island trails :) Never fear though- as the new blog will still have heaps of trail related posts and bike ramblings. Where are you based? North Island?
Wellington – i’m a contact of yours on Flickr, enderby49 – it’s how i came across the blog in the first place. Haven’t made it to CHCH for a ride yet (other than mcleans and bottle lake on borrowed gear) but with regular family visits it won’t be far off. Did you make it for a ride in Wellington yet?
Ah ok :) I’ve not ridden in Wellington yet- but will be visiting in the new year. I hear that you guys have a big celebration happening for 2010? 25yrs of MTBing in NZ? When I visit can I trouble you for a tour?
Are you riding the Karapoti? Good luck to you if you do – it’s a tough one. I haven’t really got my head around entering again 4 years after my first attempt.
A tour? Yeah do it, we ride twice a week every week at the mo and almost always looking for an opportunity to ride more.
Karapoti? Not this time around- but i’m sure that one year I’ll give it a go. I’ll be in Rotovegas over New Years and then Taupo- then onto Nelson. I’ll email you when I plan to rock up! Cheers….and wish me luck with the blog move……I mean….what’s the worst that can happen!!??!!
18,000+ views a month, sounds familiar…oh yeah, I recently totted up the viewings on Flickr and got the same figure :)
I like your site better with everything in one place.
Your Flickr stuff is awesome so i’m not surprised that you get so much traffic :) Cheers for the comments over the years by the way…..and I’m loving the mixed content too! Having everything in one place is already helping with admin!
[...] of “should I” – I’ve decided to move the content to my pesonal blog over at http://www.paulpetch.com so please update your bookmarks and news feeds. Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to [...]
Good luck with the “combined” venture Paul. I’ll keep in touch via Flickr as I’ve only got time for one obsession at the moment.
I’m starting to feel guilty now about all those posts I promised when you first contacted me.
18000 hits a month! Wow. Mine are measured in dozens and I’m thinking about giving up on my blog altogether as I’m just not doing enough interesting stuff, and unlike Flickr there is almost no feedback – it’s a one way thing.
Thanks mate and by the way- I’m in Auckland on the 27th – 29th December if you want to grab a coffee/ spin at Woodhill. No worries about the posts by the way- we are all busy :) Having 18,000 page views/ month and maybe 3 comments/ week kinda sucks, but that’s the nature of the internet isn’t it?
What has been cool though is sorting through the posts that go back about 2.5 years….and checking out how passionate I was when I arrived in NZ, the friends that I’ve made and the adventures I’ve had since then. I suppose this is why I originally setup the blog- as a scrap book for my Wife and I to look back on and I’ll now have more to “collect” and share. You never know, I might get a few more folk leaving their thoughts now that the content will be a mixed bag. Either way, it’s great to look back…….
See you on Flickr mate and remember to add me to your news feed :)
