Our legs are feeling a tad tender so today’s “recovery” ride was welcomed at Lake Taupo. It was really warm as we got our gear ready and set off, so the challenge today was going to be the heat as much as the aching legs!
The drive took about an hour and was nothing special to be fair. I’m so used to how scenic the South Island is that nothing comes close on the North Island. On arriving in Taupo we set off from the tourist rich car park along the river via Huka falls to a dam….and it was baking out in the sun and heat of the day.
On route we stopped for a sneaky dip before heading back the way we came. The return leg had considerably more climbing and the steepness found us grinding up on a fair few spots. On the Marin, this ride was not “easy” at all- but today I managed to climb like a goat and kept up with Craig who was up front pushing a good pace. Once back at the carpark we popped into the lake where hot thermal vents push out water into the icy cold river.
Not a bad day out there today with over 450M of elevation in 20KM- but personally I would have preferred to ride Crater of the Moon and avoid the tourists who shared the bike track and drop litter everywhere.

Been checking out your site for a trip to NZ in April. Will be mtn biking/road riding for about 5 days. What are the 3-4 most epic rides/locations all over the country? Looking for the best singletrack/technical stuff….
Thanks,
Justin
Hey. I can only talk of rides that I rate and the Porthills here in Christchurch is one heck of a ride alongside both Wharfedale and Craigieburn.
These alone should keep you busy for 3 – 4 days :)
